Futons - You've Gotta Love Them!

Though they've become very popular in the west, the Japanese were the first to create futons. In Japan, a futon was a mattress that could be placed over tatami flooring and folded away during the day.   The Japanese futons needed to be aired in sunlight regularly, especially if not put away during the day.  The western version of futons are much easier to take care of.  They are generally thicker than the Japanese versions and are placed on frames.  Actually, in the west, "futons" generally refer to the frame and not the mattress.

Because of their versatility, futons are a fantastic addition to any  living space.  Since they can be used as either a couch, chair or a bed, they are great for small spaces or dorm rooms -- and often cost less than traditional furniture.   Even if space is not an issue, if you regularly have overnight guests, futons come in handy because they can fold out into full, queen or king sized beds that are very comfortable.
